Update on Athlone ETU Champs
On Sunday, Willie Roy and myself travelled over to Athlone for the first marshall meeting of the 2010 European Championships.
During the presentation, Hugh McAtamney (Race Director) outlined the plans for the race. Trilogy Triathlon will be charged with looking after a part of the Elite Cylce / Run route near to the castle (also known by the race as 'Spaghetti Junction'!
This is a high-profile, high-responsibility area that the elites will pass through up to 12 times over the course of the race as they chase down the European medals.
I will give you more details at the AGM, but for now give some thought to the following:
What are the benefits?
The club will be looking into accomodation options for Friday through to Sunday as both days are potentially early starts and getting into Athlone may not be easy; plus, with accomodation available locally we can properly enjoy the party atmosphere that will descend on the town.

I will give you more details at the AGM, but for now give some thought to the following:
- Trilogy to provide 25 experienced triathlon marshals
Trilogy Marshals will be working the elite event only (age-group and triathlone is a different team) - All Trilogy marshals will be free from marshalling duties at the non Elite races and so can race the Triathlone NS event or the ETU European Champs
- We will be marshalling a total of 4 races - 2 Junior (sprint distance) and 2 Senior (olympic distance)
- You will race on Saturday, and marshall on Sunday (Juniors in morning, seniors afternoon)
What are the benefits?
- Triathlone will print about 5,000 t-shirts, polo shirts, marshall tops, and merchansise. But only 70 of all the shirts printed will be elite marshall, and you will receive one of these exclusive shirts (and, yes, Hugh has promised they woon't be exclusively yellow, like in 2009!).
- You will also be awarded a certificate noting your involvement in the event
- Other benefits will include food, drinks and specal access to post-race parties (Saturday and Sunday)
- In addition 5-6 of the marshalls, preferably any one trained as a TD/Ref or who has organised a race in the past will receive ITU training during February or March, and will receive official accreditation of this status. Interestingly, this accreditation would qualify you to Marshall the London Olympics in 2012.
