Santa Walk Updates

The Santa Walk tomorrow starts 2pm Sharp - we have to comply with the time we applied for with the Gardai, or the run may be stopped.

Please meet at Centrepoint before 1:45 so we can try you out for a suit, and please bring any cash raised.

After the walk, which is about 2km (or 30 minutes) in length, you are invited to share some mulled wine, mince pies and Christmas spirit at Coppers bar in top square.

Your efforts are very much appreciated by Winter Wonderland, the Bubble Gum club and Trilogy Triathlon. See you Sunday.

Conor Walshe writes from Vancouver!

Hi!

Just said I'd drop a quick hello mail to see how everyone is and how the plans are coming along for Xmas parties and other festivity celebrations.

Life is good over here in Vancouver. Have been up to Whistler the last two weekends for a day each so was a good laugh. The snowboarding was savage craic. It was snowing most the day Sat and Sunday so we were getting fresh snow as we were crusing downt he mountains. It even snowed down in the City in Vancouver last weekend which was strange I was told. The city was covered in a layer off snow making driving fun. Our trip home from whistler which is about 111km took us 6 hours last night so was entertaining to say the least!

We are living right on the Bay here so get to go for runs from our appartment along the bay around Stanley park. Its a really enjoyable run. There is loads to do over here and we are only scratching the surface with the stuff we are doing. There is an aquatic centre with 50m pool just a block and ahalf away from us. There just seems to be a load of amenities in really close proximity to us so we are never bored. Loads of really cool bars and restaurants as well with in walking distance of us.

I'm currently doing a bit of "landscaping" or in other words leaf clean up! I get to drive a big GMC pick up and rake up leaf's and haul them away! Great craic in the current weather but its pretty much finished now as all leaf's out of the trees. The lads who own the place are sound out though and give you time off whenever I want which is cool.

Got to see Beckham and the La Galaxies play as well up here in Vancouver. 49000 people went to the game and I'd say 48000 people were there specifically to see beckham. A cheer went up everytime he touched the ball not that he done anything with it. The most exciting part of the game was the streaker who got a full lap of the pitch done before anyone made an effort to remove him.

I will be storing my pics online so everyone can have a look at this link to see them.

So Happy Christmas to all at Trilogy - I'll be back in touch in the new year!
Let me know how you all are and if I missing anything

Apologies - Swim On, Now Off

In news just in, Portlaoise Pool have cancelled our first swim session - the one we've been waiting for for three weeks now. If I'm embarassed about sending out a confirmation text - and then sending out a cancellation text, perhaps they are also embarassed about confirming by phone and then cancelling a few short hours later.

This is a public web-page, so I will just say that I am extremely disappointed and leave it at that. Our next class will be 9 January - lets start in earnest then!

PS A big thank you to Bobby Behan for his understanding.

St Stephens Day Time Trial

Laois Cycling Club have asked us to get involved in a fun event this year - and if successful, this will become an annual event. The idea is that teams of two compete over a 8-mile course for victory - both cyclists finishing together to record their time. Eoin from Laois Cycling has more:

"Karl, could you let your members know about the 2 up time trial on St Stephens day. We are meeting up in the Comfort Inn hotel at 9.30am. Everyone of all abilities is welcome - and we mean everyone ... the emphasis is on having a laugh rather than having a serious competition.

The course is 8 miles. We will pull names out of a hat and partner one person from the cycling club with one from Trilogy. The 2 have to finish together to record a time. There will be a prize fund of €200."

Sounds like a great event, the perfect way to shake off the excess of Christmas Day and still be home for Stephens Day Breakfast!

We are still trying to get a group together to give this a go early in the New Year. let me know any interest!

Thursdays New Session - ESD

The problem with regular training is that it is just that – regular. Do the same session week in and week out, and your body – fantastic piece of tri-kit that it is –simply adapts to the training and you start getting little or no extra benefit. With the new Thursday session, John Bolton of the Heritage has taken a 17-week schedule and built into it a high intensity, highly varied routine. You will learn a new cross-training routine, develop it, make a training gain, and then move on to the next routine.

The overall emphasis of the course is to develop your energy systems (ESD = Energy System Development). Never heard of them before? Well energy systems are basically your aerobic and anaerobic systems. Aerobic energy gets you some of the way, anaerobic keeps you going. To be a good triathlete you need to develop both of these, and the good news is that developing one helps the other.

The new session uses a technique called ‘blood-shunting’ which is just like it sounds – rapidly driving blood through your body. The technique involves alternating between upper and lower body workouts. As you switch between the two blood is rapidly ‘shunted’ up, down and through your body, creating a high-intensity workout. Many of the routines will involve ‘boxing’ exercises – however, the benefits of these classes transfer to all sports as they are primarily aimed at energy system development. Put simply, while you will be working out like a boxer every Thursday til May, you will be an improved swimmer, cyclist, runner and triathlete next summer.

The 17 week programme splits down as follows (the actual length of each period will depend on progress made, but each period will last at least 4 weeks). All sessions are high intensity, and should not be undertaken by anyone who does not already have a base level of fitness – these classes are not suitable for beginners.

Week 1-6; Bexercise. Consisting of station based exercises such as floor to ceiling ball, skipping, speed ball, pads, each individual will spend 30 – 60 seconds at each station before moving on. Incorporated in the session also will be group based activities, this portion of the class will vary between repetitions and length of time for each activity. All the routines in this class are based around boxing training or boxing techniques.

Week 7-12 Circuit Training. Also a station based exercise routine where the class will work in pairs or as individuals. Activities last 20 – 40 seconds before moving on. Each station will comprise body resistance exercise such as press ups, sit ups, etc and resistance exercise such as squat, shoulder press, etc. Some aspects of boxercise may also be used during this routine from time to time.

Week 13-17 Kick Boxing. In phase three we move on to kick-boxing, a completely non contact routine incorporating various punches and kicking combinations. The emphasizes is more on kicking, with a combination of punching, floor to ceiling ball, speed ball and body resistance exercises incorporated into the routine.

John is confident that by combining the intensity of the workouts above with the variety of the three phases in the programme that you will experience results in 17 weeks that no other training technique could deliver. The sessions will be hard, your will know you have worked out, but they will pay off. These classes have been specifically designed by John – a top-class endurance athlete – for Trilogy, and have been specifically designed to deliver results in the 2008 season. While you will need to keep up the rest of your training routine, if you follow this programme, you can expect to improve next year.

With 17 weeks of high-intensity, controlled work-out, you can look forward to benefits across all three sports. One of the biggest gains will be in swimming, where your arms will have a much higher level of local muscle endurance and so will be able to cope with working at a higher intensity for a longer period. On the bike, your arms won’t tire as much – meaning a more efficient bike, especially on the hills, and the benefits of building endurance in the legs will help across each part of your tri race.

One last thing to note. The Heritage and many other gyms offer classes in all the above – kick-boxing, boxercise and circuits. The intensity of these classes are kept to a certain level for good reason – many participants are novice atheletes. The Trilogy Classes are advanced and designed for a group of people who have a good background in training and fitness. The classes will be led by a single instructor (Danielle) and are closed to non-Trilogy members.

While many of you are Heritage members, the classes above have been designed for us, we have exclusive and private use of the studio for the duration of our classes, and we have been given a dedicated instructor to deliver the programme. For this reason, the ESD session is a paid-for session, just like Pilates, Swimming or Spinning.

Pilates Class - Ending Soon - New Class Coming

Its with a sad heart that I tell you that Thursday Pilates will be ending next Thursday (13 December). Alison is moving to Kilkenny early next year, and with a number of work pressures at her practice, Physio Plus, her availability for evening classes will be diminished. The classes were a real success, and it is to Alison's credit that people will be sad to see them end.

However, starting on 10 January, there will be a new studio class available to Trilogy members. This is a private session in the Heritage and will be run by Danielle over 17 Weeks to the start of May. The session will be circuits-style and will incorporate a range of cross-training relevant to running, cycling and swimming, including kick-boxing and boxercise as well as a number of core strength elements. The objective of the class is 'strength and conditioning' and it will very much be an active session.

The new session will be at exactly the same times (6pm an 8:30pm), but the venue will be the Heritage studio.

Anybody signed up for Pilates can join this class; anyone on other packages who wish to join may also do so by addiing it to their package.

While I encourage everyone to give the new class a go, if you would prefer a refund for these sessions, then please contact Karl and this can be arranged before the final Pilates session next week.

Finally, I'd like to thank and congratulate Alison on her brilliant work with the Pilates class, and hope that we can bring it back some time in the future.

Swimming - Still waiting for news

I am still awaiting news from the Pool regarding when the swim sessions can commence. Keep an eye here for updates.

Club Gear - Next Saturday, 8 December

Trilogy's New Club Gear is due in Ireland early this week (currently en route with FedEx). I hope to have it in Portlaoise by the end of the week, and have booked the Methodist Hall for a day of fitting / collection on Saturday next, 8 December.

The hall will be open from midday until 5:30 or so, and you can pop in anytime. You will be given the clothes in the size you ordered, and you can try them on and if you need to change sizes, we'll do our best to facilitate you there and then. However, it may not be until eveyone has tried on everything that swaps can be arranged.

Please try to drop in some time this day, as it is the most effective way to distrubute the 40 or so sets of gear bought (otherwise it could take weeks to meet up with everyone). There will be changing facilities, tea, coffee and biscuits.

We will also have our t-shirts back on sale - perfect for that present you haven't got yet, or an opportunity to pick up one of the t-shirts you missed when they went on sale over the Summer. And if you still need a sponsoship form for Santa Run, then you will be able to get one then too.

100 Santa Sponsorship forms on the way

Sponsorship forms for the Santa Run will be available this week. There are only about 20 people signed up so far, a good bit off our target of 100 Santas. Have you recruited a Santa? Theres still time to start! See Willie if you need a printed poster to put up at work / in your local / elsewhere.
